Web5 dec. 2009 · The whiring rattle noise only starts when the gearbox get hots and is only really noticable at low speed with little load on the gearbox. I ended up replacing the oil with a higher temp heavier grade 80W-140W gear oil and added a tube of Nulon which seems to have quietened things down a lot. 12-05-2009, 07:47 PM #13. Benny01.

Tired layshaft bearings make a similar whirring noise, mainly when accelerating in intermediate gears, not in 4th. I realized that in N, I can rotate the drive shaft with a lot of force. If I hold down the clutch, I can turn it much easier. I believe the only thing that can cause this is a blown up needle bearing inside the input shaft.
